Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

I have gone with one of my top three shows, Dark, and song lyrics that fit particular characters.

Notes:
For me, it was too "perfumey." I have that issue with a lot of Earl Grey teas. It was still very drinkable. After I got used to the smell, it was a decent tea to help me make it through the afternoon while I tackled my to do list.

Notes:
My review for this might be a little unfair as it came from the jar of random tea and by the art on the packaging, it might have been a little past it's prime. That being said, it was okay. I thought it might be a blend, given it's nearly non-existent chamomile flavor, but it's not. That could be it's age. My bar for chamomile is low and this particular bag of tea limboed under it.

So, when I know there is going to be a gap between when I drink a tea I'm planning on reviewing and when I actually post a review for it, I try to take notes. My notes on this tea just say, "No." Literally nothing else, not even a rating. I do know I also did not finish drinking it. One plus I remember is that it didn't have the bitter dirt taste some turmeric teas have.

Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Here a few communities I enjoy:

- Holmesian Mantelpiece - this one is over on Tumblr, and its a community for all Sherlock Holmes fandoms. We have fun sharing fanworks and voting on daily trivia
- [community profile] fancake - is a great reccing community, every month is a different theme, and members share fanworks related to the them
- Fanlore Discord - if you're a fanlore editor come join us on the discord, we chat mostly about editing articles, etc, but also greater fandom stuff
- [community profile] holmestice - if you're looking for a Hollmes related exchange I highly recommend holmestice, they run two exchanges a year, one in the spring and one in the winter, and its open to all Holmes adaptations.  I got a lovely Rathbone Holmes fic last round, plus a nice Granada treat.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

I'm terrible with posts like this, but here goes. Thank you to everyone who follows me and leaves comments on my posts. Thank you to everyone who does the Book Bingo with me. Aand last but not least, thank you to all my fellow Fanlore editors, there aren't a lot of us, but we toil away trying our best to archive fandom history.

Anyways, please enjoy this multifandom dance vid I found on the net:

Tea Month 2026: Tea 4

Tea Review
Name: Anela Hawaiian Flavored
Brand: Lupicia
Type: unknown blend
Tea bag

Notes:
This tea and I went on a journey. To start with, I have no idea where I got this tea originally. It was in my jar of random packaged bags of tea. The packaging just has the brand name and "ANELA Hawaiian Flavored" on the front and the back just has brewing instructions in Japanese & English. I tried googling it. I found out anela means angel, maybe, and I found the USA version of the Lupicia website. The tea is not listed anywhere, even when I tried to search their catalog of over 400 teas, which includes the discontinued ones. It just kept saying it doesn't exist. Also, they seem to exclusively sell loose tea in tins and this is a bag in a packet. It does look like something you might get at a hotel, so maybe it wasn't a regular retail product.

Anyway, I finally found mention of the flavor in two places; a blog post and a reddit comment. In a blog post from 2018, someone had bought the Lupicia Hawaiian tea sampler, which included the Anela tea. At that time, it was described as "a sweet aromatic strawberry lychee black tea." The reddit comment was complaining that their favorite Lupicia tea used to be Anela, which used to be a jasmine lychee green tea, but it had changed to a strawberry lychee black tea.

Neither of these descriptions fit what I drank.

I did enjoy it. It was fun to drink. I couldn't pick out any particular flavors, but it hit my taste buds as "tropical flavor" without any notes of coconut or pineapple. Honestly the first thing I pictured in my head was the tropical trail mix they used to have in the bulk bins at the grocery store. Though it didn't taste like that either. It was dark enough, it was most likely a black tea blend, so probably the strawberry lychee.

I'd drink it again, if I had more. I don't see that happening.

This is your most basic, no frills black tea. I don't have anything negative to say about it. It's a little weaker than some black teas. It smells good. Pleasant to have in the morning when it takes all of your brain function to put the water on to boil. It's also good for making sun tea.

This was a gift. (Thank you, Okapi!) I'm also pretty sure it was also my first roasted herbal tea. I was definitely excited for this one. The first thing that hit me was how amazing it smelled. The taste was a little weaker than I was expecting, but it was quite good. It is definitely a dessert tea, like it begs you to drink it with a little sweet nibble on the side. I had been sort of waiting to drink it until my mother made her gingerbread (think the cake, not cookies), but that was not meant to be. It would definitely pair nicely with something chocolate.

And yes I do realize one pic is of Basil/Dawson, but they are the mouse equivalent for Holmes/Watson, and I love them.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Honestly, trope doesn't entirely resonate. I can remember years ago, seeing something about tropes and just not relating to any of all that forced to share a bed/enemies to lovers/coffee shop AU stuff. But I do have a theme, which is alternate timelines. What if So and so never died? What if the villain made the obvious choice that the original writers seem to have somehow totally missed? What if Character X was the one to move from his cancelled spinoff to the main show? I have done them all.

The first series I ever saw to completion was Once Upon a Time, where Jafar was the one to move across from the Wonderland spinoff to the main show (imagine his lamp ending up in Gold's shop and Zelena accidentally letting him out). Another one was The Flash, where Eobard manipulated Nora into giving Barry the metahuman cure and the finale showed a dystopian 2049 that resulted from this (at the time I started that, I was convinced that was the route canon was going to take; to this day, I still don't get why the writers wasted time on Cicada rather than pursuing this route and just letting Eobard be the bad guy). I've saved Sun, Jin and Sayid on Lost several times over (and after a prompt in last year's three sentence ficathon, I was even tempted to expand on my attempt at Smokey McSmokeFace going back to the classical Roman era to get off the island while he was still human).

And yes, I have a few ongoing such works which I'm determined to finish. The School Spirits one where Mr Martin chooses to possess Emilio instead and the impact this has on Charley and Yuri is barely started (the upcoming new season may help with that), and I am determined I will push past my mental block on a) the Lost series where Sun joined the others in 1977 (I lost heart after the decision in canon to kill her off, which I still strongly disagree with 15 years on) and b) the Dark series where Ulrich successfully rescues Mikkel from 1986 (at this rate, I think I'm actually going to end up going down the Choose Your Own Adventure route, one where Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending and the minimum of characters are erased from existence, and one where Claudia gets hers.)

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

This is actually something that I've been wondering if I need to improve on, especially when it comes to writing series. Specifically, how much of a series I should have planned out before I start posting it, although admittedly there have been a few times where I've intended something as a one-shot and then realised that actually I can't really leave the story where it is.

Also, this is a process specifically to Dark more than any of my other fandoms, but I realised I should probably make sure I have a full understanding of the original timeline before I try to change it. A moment of sheer frustration at Ulrich getting stuck in 1953 and being unable to rescue Mikkel from 1986 led me to write a scene where Ulrich did get to 1986, and it became clear I couldn't just leave it there. But at that point in season 1, I didn't have the whole context of how that whole family tree/timeline worked, or the reasons why the character Claudia just would not let the timeline deviate that way. So I now find myself with an ending I know has to happen, but that I was trying to avoid and that's just blocking me finishing the final chapter. Anyone remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books as kids? I'm seriously thinking about those now as I'm tempted to write the one ending where Claudia fixes the timeline her way or trying to work out if there's any way of incorporating the alternate universe characters into the timeline so the minimum of people actually get erased from existence and Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending.

Something I have often done is been determined to get a fic finished before the next episode of a show aired and canon could contradict it. This tends to be easier with one shots than series, although I've only ever had one dickhead trying to "correct" me over not incorporating context that hadn't aired at the time that chapter was posted. But since that was a known troll, they could shove their corrections where the sun didn't shine. If that does come up, I don't rewrite.

Sometimes it involves going back and watching old episodes, or even just checking facts on fandom wikis, to make sure I have my details correct. (Even if I sometimes wonder why I bother - for example, I was trying to find out whether Fringe's Peter Bishop's specific date of birth was ever confirmed, to see if it was feasible for a time travelling Daniel from Lost to have met Walter before Peter was born to give him the name. In the process, I managed to establish that Walter's father's date of death in 1944 doesn't make sense for Walter's birth in 1946, so decided that if the writers weren't going to worry about that, I'd roll with my idea whatever!)

As far as requests go, if I'm not doing it as part of an exchange, I'll only consider if we've interacted. Just my way of making sure I don't end up granting a request for aforementioned known troll, whose MO was to ask for requests then spam anyone who didn't take their (very specific) requests with insults.

But anyway, what I'm wondering if I need to do is try and do more planning in advance of any story likely to become a series before I start posting it. I have one now I'm trying to work out (School Spirits, a rewrite of season 2 where Mr Martin possesses someone other than who he actually does possess in canon) so I'm going to start with that.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

Oh man, I know some people have very detailed plans when it comes to writing, but I think I'm more of gardener than an architect like George RR Martin used to say.  First I usually get a prompt either while doing an exchange or from one of those prompt month challenges like Flufftober, then I think on it for awhile.  Once the outline of a scene has formed in my brain then I write it down.  Usually I write it out by hand first, then I will type it up on my computer.  The only time I skip handwriting is if it is only a drabble, that I might just type up quickly on my computer. Then I let a little time pass (usually a few days) and then reread it and do my revisions.  I usually only do one set of revisions, which I know goes against common writing advice, but I don't usually have the patience to wait long for my story to be complete, also exchanges and what not have pretty tight deadlines, depending on the exchange. I normally don't use a beta reader unless it is a requirement.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I'm sure I've talked about Hurt/Comfort before, and it's still the goat!  I especially love it when the character that doesn't normally get cared for, or is normally the caretaker, is hurt and has to accept care and comfort from another.

I also love Fairy Tale/Fantasy AUs.  I'm not even sure why, but if you put my faves in a fairy tale retelling I'll eat that up with a spoon.  There was this exchange called Fairy Tale Inspired that I loved, and participated in every year, but unfortunately it stopped running.  I thought about running a similar exchange myself, but I have so much on my plate at the moment I don't currently have the time.

I also enjoy a good regency AU, probably because I read so many regency romances years ago.  I especially like alternative realities where same sex pairings were accepted at the time.

Lastly, bed-sharing.  For some reason the characters have to cuddle up in bed together, yes please!  It doesn't even have to lead to sexy times, although a little smut is always a treat.  I just love my characters being all cozy together.

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

The fact that I can usually manage to see the humour in situations and don't get moody and sulky about minor stuff.

The fact that I'll try creating for any character once and give them all some attention rather than sticking to the same old favourites.

The fact that you always know where you are with me, I can't be doing with fake bullshit/not saying what I mean/expecting people to be psychic/not using my words type crap.

My One True Crossover pairing is Rumple from Once Upon a Time and Rowena from Supernatural, so any kind of fic or art for them would be great.

I still love the idea of an iZombie fic where Liv is on romance writer brain right after solving the Zombie High murder case, starts writing Zombie High slash fiction and Ravi has to read it.

Anything post-S2 of The Wilds, which was cancelled way before its time.

CAT icons.

Anything Sayid/Desmond from Lost.

Anything at all from Dark, From, School Spirits or Yellowjackets.

Speaking of, even just having people who know Dark or From and who I can ramble at about them would be great. It's hard to vent about how I've written myself into a corner while trying to rescue Mikkel from 1986 when no one knows the whole complexities of that family tree.

Challenge #5

It always feels a little weird doing a wishlist so soon after the holidays, especially as some exchanges like Fandom Trees usually haven't done their reveals yet, but that relates to my main wish on my wishlist right now.

1) If you have time and inclination, please check out the needy trees at [community profile] fandomtrees. The goal is for every person who signed up to have at least two gifts under their tree before the reveals on the 17th and it looks we have nine people who still have zero or only one gift. You do not need to have signed up with a tree to leave fills under a tree.

2) Tell me your favorite place to play in fandom or consume fandomy things that isn't DW or AO3.

3) Rec me your favorite thing you read last year; fic, book, article, blog, whatever. Audio, physical, e-format, etc. It all counts, as long as you loved it.

Thank you for reading.
